My doctor is not listening...

There are a number of common reasons as to why patients are unhappy with the care and treatment they receive from doctors.

Not all doctors have much experience in the field of mental illness and you may find this contributes to your dissatisfaction. Some patients feel that their doctor is not listening to them or they are unable to communicate effectively, or in a way that you can understand.

You could try letting the doctor know what you are finding difficult, as there may be some simple changes s/he could make. However, if you are still unhappy with your GP you could ask to see someone different, or if your practice allows you to choose the doctor you see when you book your appointment, ask if there is someone at the practice who has experience with mental health issues.

What about psychiatrists?

Transferring from one psychiatrist to another can be difficult. Psychiatrists usually cover a geographical area and it can be difficult to see someone else outside of this. You have no legal right to choose your psychiatrist, but if you would like to take this further contact the Rethink Advice and Information Service who may be able to help.
