Mobile phone 'senses depression'
Would you buy a mobile phone that knows when you're depressed?
Researchers have been working on a new smartphone that they say could help people with depression.
The idea is that the phones, called Mobylise, will get to know people's usual movements and rhythms. If someone then breaks them, say by staying in bed all day, the phone could alert friends or family. They in turn can send a text message or pop in to offer support.
There's already been a small trial with 8 volunteers. Dr Mohr at Northwestern said today speaking in the Daily Mail:
"They all had a major depressive disorder when they started, and they were all both clinically and statistically better at the end of the treatment"
But could this feel like being 'spied on' in your own home?
Would more devices like this for other mental illnesses help people feel less isolated or even 'forgotten'?
