Denise Welch - good intentions in the media?

Denise Welch is making headlines for her behaviour on Celebrity Big Brother, is the concern for her mental health valid, or just tasteless speculation?

Denise Welch - Celebrity Big Brother mental helath speculationLoose Women presenter Denise Welch is currently appearing in Celebrity Big Brother - and is attracting press attention for her behaviour, to the extent that now she is the subject of mental health-related speculation. Her 'pals' have allegedly been quoted saying:

"Denise has had depression in the past and everyone is worried a pressurised environment like Big Brother could cause her serious problems."

According to the Huffington Post, she has been "crying hysterically" and her actions have "sparked fears she is heading for a nervous breakdown"

But is this concern sincere - or is speculating about her specific state of health the best way to help anyone?

We have commented on reality TV in the past, for instance when Ceri Rees was on the X Factor. We were careful to avoid speculation on what someone is actually experiencing, only that they appeared vulnerable, and that vulnerability should be dealt with properly - Mark Davies, our Director of Communications, said:

“With the right support, there is no reason why people with mental health problems shouldn’t be allowed to appear on shows like this – after all some of our most talented stars have been affected by mental health problems, such as Robbie Williams and Catherine Zeta Jones. However, if someone appears vulnerable as Ceri did, to put them in the spotlight in this context is exploitative..."

So, do you think the current press speculation about Denise Welch is basically well-meaning, and designed to raise alarm bells over her vulnerability?

Or do you think the media are trying to have their cake and eat it too - create gossip that is apparently concerned, but is in fact also exploiting a vulnerable person?

Then again, perhaps it doesn't matter if motives are impure, if the outcome is that someone who needs help, gets it..?

Denise Welch on Big Brother

Most people have absolutely NO Idea what DEPRESSION is.... 1/ To the Healthy Able Bodied population DEPRESSION is: When some-one is having a bad day: or some one Dies: breaking up with a Girlfriend: or leaving home and family: causing the peson feels very sad.. 2/ DEPRESSION to the people of Depression, Mental Health Disorders, Disability is something quite different. This is like a permanent wave and rage of INTERNAL DISORDERS that are mostly inside your Body, which can rise and fall like the waves of the ocean causing you to feel permanently sick. Your heart could be beating in you chest too fast (Panic Attack): You may feel hot like you are about to vomit: Your tummy seems to be churning all the time (Eating Disorder): your legs feel extremely weak and you are exhausted and have NO energy. when the individual tries to react normally, it is this rage on the INSIDE which make them appear to behave out of character (to You), but they could have been experiencing that for 30 or 40 years. It Is only because it is BIG BROTHER and you can watch the person 24hrs a Day that you feel concerned. Denise Welch is an intelligent grown woman, she knows if things are getting too much for her, and she can walk out of the STUDIO at anytime.
