The long wait for services

Topics: Someone who has experienced mental illness, Health professionals, Services, Work and money

My CPN decided that I needed help around the home and to access social groups. So, as she is also my care coordinator, she made a referral to Social Services.

This was last Christmas 2007! They came and carried out a financial assessment. Then they decided I didn't need one because I'm on section 117. So they said that I didn't have to pay. Did I get services? No, I waited and every time my CPN came it was the same old story: her boss didn't want to pay out of his budget, so I then got referred for direct payments. This was Easter, and back to the same department that said I pay nothing, for another financial assessment. Now it's June and still no services. July came and I rang the department to remind them I'm on a 117. They sent me a letter stating that I didn't have to pay for services except meals and transport, still no services. Then they tell me that they have sent my file to the voluntary agency that help with Direct Payments. No address or contact number so I can follow it up.

I just wait and the months go by with out access to services. I don't know how long I'll have to wait to hear from the voluntary sector, maybe by Christmas I'll get an appointment to see them. Then there is all the hassle of setting up bank accounts and employing people, keeping receipts, balancing the books and interviewing carers. Maybe next financial year I'll finally get the services I'm entitled to. I'll let you know watch this space.

I still can't decide for myself which services I need as my CPN has to make a referral for the kinds of things she thinks I need. I think that I need a weight management class and an exercise group or relaxation groups, but she says she doesn't think they have any and has only given me 3 hours a week with a carer for help in the home. Social groups haven't been mentioned. But every 2 weeks they make sure I get my Haldol injection and I can be recalled to hospital at any time as if that's all that matters .What about my quality of life?

There is some good news however, my direct payments came through this month. Better late than never!

writing a book on service user's experiences

I am writing a book and would like to include service user's experiences. Would you agree to me including your words concerning the struggle to get your services? Thanks for considering this.

theatre project

Dear Ebony, I am actually writing not for printed comment on your blog but to inform you of a project which is currently being created by my daughter - www.thesilents.wordpress.com This project involves obtaining input from a variety of people on issues related to imagination and mental health. Rachel is seeking to reach out to persons and families impacted by mental illness, to record their voices and experiences, and to examine means of positively affecting the public's awareness of, and attitude toward, mental illness. She is particularly interested in reaching young people in the hopes of improving early help-seeking and family/community support. Toward that end, she is seeking the help of a variety of people to respond to a series of questions found at www.thesilents.wordpress.com/testimony/. If you have the time, we'd appreciate you taking a look at this page, and if you are able, to share stories also. If you know of others who might be interested in helping too, please pass this info along. Thank you very much. and, i enjoyed reading your blog - carry on.
