Dorothy
My brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1985 when he was 29 years old. However, he had been ill since 1974.
The social climate in those days was very different to how it is now. In those days there was no early intervention or care plans. Most crucially, no-one had any ideas about involving carers – quite the opposite in fact. My parents were regarded as part of John’s problem and were given no information or support at all.
John is six years younger than I am and we have another brother and sister – there are four of us. Our parents have now passed away and we share support for John between us. He lives independently and manages fairly well. However, his physical health is not good and this is a concern.
I shall be writing this blog for the next few weeks, sharing some of my sibling experiences from over the years.
