We didn’t cause the economic crash...so why are we paying for it?

I've spent a lot of this month being angry. Maybe many of us patients have, and perhaps for the same reason. Anyway, here's my beef.

Now that the Work Capability Assessments are starting, and our DLA (Disability Living Allowance) is being assessed yet again, mental health patients along with the rest of the disabled feel under direct financial, social and clinical threat. MIND did a survey recently about the levels of anxiety among patients about WCAs, and found that 51% questioned were having suicidal thoughts over them.  And that's even before they start in most areas.

And of course, the worry is we will be assessed by people who have no training in psychology or psychiatry. According to legend, there is one Job Centre in Glasgow which the inhabitants of that fair city are already calling Lourdes, because so many people go in sick an come out healed. Amusing but not very reassuring. And oh, it looks like our health minister has decided not to honour the last government's pledge to increase spending on mental health research by 7% - when originally he said he would.

Let's imagine a parallel situation. Supposing we had a government which adopted a policy which could kill cancer patients, and reduced the spending on cancer research. I reckon there might be a bit of a fuss. Not so for mental health, of course.

So why is it happening to us then? I think the answer lies in the coalition Government's analysis and proposed cure for our national deficit.  According to this scenario one of the major causes of our financial troubles is the Welfare State - apparently £1.5bn lost through incapacity benefit fraud.

Of course it is all hogwash. Mental health patients didn't cause the economic crash: that was American bankers and their chums in the City of London. The Prime Minister would of course say that we are all in this together. Except that he doesn't have to go through a hostile interrogation where you are presumed guilty until proven innocent, or live on incapacity benefit, or understand how a hard up single mum might take a few hours' cleaning cash in hand to make ends meet, or have to cope with the fear of living in a society in which the stigma against mental health feels institutionalised.

The figures are nonsense too. What Cameron failed to mention was that HMRC estimates that the loss to the exchequer through VAT fraud – when you give your plumber cash in hand – is £10bn: £8.5bn more than  Incapacity Benefit fraud. Yet we don't see the Government  going after plumbers for their own political ends, it seems much of the Press is horribly involved in all of this, despite their lip service to mental health issues. And yes, of course people commit fraud. But I seem to remember that we have a police force somewhere.

And it does seem a shame that the horrors of mental illness have to be added to in such a cruel way.

Couldn't agree more, Chris: as I said on my own and the 5 Quid for Life blogs recently, any deaths resulting from people's responses to this government's cuts aren't suicide: they're murder. http://philgroom.wordpress.com/2011/06/02/it-isnt-suicide-its-murder/

I agree with bot the commentators on this subject 100%. No one wakes up and thinks (Ok nothing to do today ...Ill be ill) I appreciate the GPS are under a lot of pressure but in y own instance I asked a local one if I could have some time with a psychiatrist and got a firm NO. IM 62 years of age, have a loen history of "mental breakdowns" followed by a very serious stroke this time last year and I want to get well, ts not that i was asking that much but the GPS seem brainwashed to treat everyone now with medication and that definately is not the awnser, i have probs which are largely physical at the mo and ive been lucky and found some voluntary theatre work,I must say Im not sure about the war plans tho Debbie, but judging by the amount of unrest in the world we live in , I would not discount that, we have a fight on our hands as it is, and ive just witnessed a local "Trooping The colour" 3 brass bands and youngsters from the army navy and airforce parading up the local high street, And we must back rethink (am ex user) as much as possible.

this govenment have always been the same! they are conservative which means "forget the people and lets just think about our selfs cause we got money so forget the poor." Thatcher tried to do the same years ago...privatise NHS ( bringing in private sector services in the NHS this time), get rid of social housing by selling it of ( this govenement are bringing in private housing in the social system on a three years tenency) , cut the welfare system.raising the pention age to 66 for woman? another way of saving money as the more years to you put in to taxes and the chances of living that long?.they will if they have there way destroy the welfare stystem all together , there will be nothing left for anyone. this govenment are picking on the most needy and vulnarble they are ruthless and non careing. the only way to fight is to be heard and write to your MP and complane , join rethink campane or get actively involved..if you want to change policy ! you have to be in it and get heard.they say they increased employment by 0.5 % in feb? you know why? it was the assessers for ESA and all the job centre staff needed getting ready to put a noose around our knecks.i believe they want to cut the defaciet because they are planning to go to war rather than the economic debt! they are going to need the money.
