Individuals who have a severe and persistent mental disorder, including schizophrenia or manic depression, very often present a variety of physical health problems, among them obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. In many instances, medical problems may result from negative side effects of medication being taken to manage the mental disorder; in turn, physical health problems may serve to encourage non-compliance with prescribed psychiatric medications.
Exercise empowers mental illness sufferers to take an active role in trying to get better. Patients who exercise often experience increased self-esteem as they take ownership of their condition and gain a greater sense of accomplishment. 30 minutes of brisk exercise three times a week can be as effective as drug therapy in relieving the symptoms of major depression in the short term, for some, and continued exercise greatly reduces the chances of the depression returning.

Speak to your GP about what exercise would be suitable for you, as too much exercise can have negative effects too.

Keeping well and exercising

Whilst it is common knowledge that exercise benefits our physical health, few know about the positives it has upon our mental health. Whilst we take vitamins, eat organic foods and drink pro-biotic yogurts in an attempt to care for our bodies, many of us don't know the first thing about looking after our minds.

How many of us know that exercise can be effective in both preventing and treating mild to moderate depression and anxiety? Exercise actually acts as a preventive medicine against anxiety and depression, and a strong immune system makes the mind better able to cope with life's stresses and strains.

Take advice from you GP, get out and go for a walk, use your local sports clubs and stay well. Where ever you are and what ever services you are accessing, they should be able to provide you with details and support you in staying fit.

What is my blood glucose level? Was it checked while fasting?
Diabetes is a very important cause of coronary artery disease. It is best detected by a fasting blood glucose test in which you fast from midnight and have a blood test in the morning.
