Schizoaffective Disorder

Schizoaffective disorder is a combination of symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This condition is often treated with medication and talking therapies can also be helpful.

WomanThere is a 1 in 200 chance of developing schizoaffective disorder. Some people believe that this statistic may be higher as many people are given an incorrect diagnosis instead of a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder. Symptoms of the condition usually show in early adulthood.

More women than men tend to suffer from schizoaffective disorder.

Schizoaffective disorder is a condition in which there are symptoms of bipolar disorder (depression or mania), and symptoms of schizophrenia present at the same time, or within a few days of each other. For a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder to be given, there must be at least a two week period where someone has only psychotic symptoms, without signs of depression or mania.

Diagnosis is often not clear cut and may change.
