About Rethink Mental Illness
Welcome to Rethink Mental Illness. We help millions of people affected by mental illness by challenging attitudes, changing lives. Here is just a selection about what we do, and what it means for you.
Who are we?
We believe a better life is possible for millions of people affected by mental illness.
Over 40 years ago, one man bravely spoke about his family’s experiences of mental illness in a letter to the Times and in the process brought together hundreds to talk about their experiences of mental illness and support each other.
Today we directly support almost 60,000 people every year across England to get through crises, to live independently and to realise they are not alone. And we change attitudes and policy for millions.
When I was first ill, I had no hope. Through Rethink Mental Illness I found people with real understanding of what I was going through and genuine expertise. I’m still involved today as a member, giving back my passion and commitment.

Advice and information
We provide expert, accredited advice and information to everyone affected by mental health problems. When mental illness first hits you or your family, it can be hard to know who or what to trust. We give people clear, relevant information on everything from treatment and care to benefits and employment rights. We were the first mental health charity to gain the Information Standard for our trusted and relevant information.
Services and groups
We have over 200 mental health services and 150 support groups across England. From psychological therapies and Crisis and Recovery Houses to peer support groups and housing services, we directly help thousands of people every year across England. Find out what we have near you. Over 90% of people using our services say they are respected, listened to and get the right kind of support. If you want support online instead, go to our discussion community RethinkTalk or our pages on Facebook, Twitter. It's easy to find a good supportive chat or lively debate going on every single day.
Campaigning
We campaign nationally for policy change, and locally for the support people need. We have changed the law to improve life for millions of people with mental health problems and we are changing public attitudes through the Time to Change campaign, which we lead in partnership with Mind.

How we do it
Our work is overseen by the Board of Trustees, many of whom have personal experience of mental illness, either as someone who has a diagnosis or as a family members and carer.
A lot of our work is funded by health authorities and local authorities, who pay us to provide high quality services across England. We also raise money for special projects and campaigns by applying to trusts and other grant-making bodies and asking people to donate to us.
